About Matthew Moses Combs, I

Possibly one of the first Comb's to settle in Breathitt County

Birth:  1790 Russell County Virginia, USA Death:  1859 Breathitt County Kentucky, USA

Son of Henry Combs and Rachel Clements. Father of Rachel Combs. Was married to Frances Brown, on May 28, 1810.

His date of death was reported in two Revolutionary War Applications as being 1859. The sources of information for those applications included Dr. Josiah H. Combs, who was a genealogist for the Combs family (lived in Fort Worth, Texas).

Yet, in the 1860 Census Report, it appears that Matthew and his wife Francis were living with their son Isaac and his family, and that Matthew was listed as "Moses" Combs. He was also shown to be blind. However, as professional genealogists know, very often people were listed in a census report, even if they had died shortly before the report was taken, as a gesture of respect. So the appearance of his name in the 1860 report is not positive proof that he was alive in 1860, and so he may, in fact, have died in 1859.

Many people report his death as being 1866, but to date, no evidence has been provided to substantiate that date. Unfortunately, on ancestry.com, people keep copying that date of death without any documentation to back it up.

The marker that was placed at his grave was placed there many, many years after his death. The date of death on that marker (1862) has also not been proven and is highly questionable. (So many of the markers placed on graves many years after a person's death have incorrect dates on them.)

His wife Frances was seen in the 1870 Census Report as "Frankey." It was said that she died on April 13, 1872.
