About Matthew Wildman of Selside & Clapham

As distinguished from the Matthew WIldman of Lowgill/Croasdale Grains

~• A Matthew WIldman married Mary Spalton of Austweek (Austwick)in June 1656 < If these are different men they both baptized their children in Clapham parish... (I think they are the same) = MMvB vol. curator

Selside is just over the mountain from Ingleton and Thornton-in-Lonsdale. As to the reference to "pish: Lombe" or parish of Lombe, it is hard to comprehend what that means, Selside being such a small settlement.

The word is said to be derived from Old Norse lundr, meaning: grove, wood + byr = farm, settlement.

So, perhaps "parish of Lombe" is merely a generic term meaning something similar to small farm place where there's a grove of trees"... (?)

Austwick is a farm community just to the south east of Clapham

"Lowkber" is another Wildman associated place name of Norse derivation. The Coldcotes farm is on Lowkber Lane (now = 2020 AD)

Vol. II page 140 1675
Matthew Wildman, of Celside†† in the Parish of Horton in {Ribblesdale}√, was prosecuted in
the Ecclesiastical Court, at the suit of Thomas Watson, Impropriator for Tithes, and
by a Writ de Ex communicato capiendo was committed to prison on the 12th of the
Third month.(1675)

As this year is 1675 we might guess that the Matthew imprisoned is a son of Mathew Wildman of Selside named in the Will..††† (because of the Selside connection)

The full text of the above reads:

"Matthew Wildman of Celside, in the parish of Horton in Craven, and County of York Husbandman sued in the same Court by Thomas Wilson of Becrof †† that, in the parish afore-said Impropriator, for Substraction of Tythe, and for his Con∣tumacy in not appearing to Citation, was decreed excommu∣nicate by H. W. Chancellor, and a Writ sued out by Thomas Holms Procter, and attached by Robert Banks of Giglesweek Yeoman and Appariter, and committed the 12th of the 3d Moneth, 75. where he yet remains."

This is rather poignant as there were Tatham relatives of Matthew wildman who were also being severally punished under the same circumstances. See Elizabeth Wildman, Quaker Martyr . ~• Elizabeth Wildman, Quaker Martyr is Matthew Wildman's first cousin's wife.

it would be good to research Thomas Wilson of Becrof ††. I had assumed that Becroft of this quote and Biggecrofte of the Tathams are one and the same places but they are probably not. There were at least two Becrofts of the Craven district. The one in Horton-in-Ribblesdale / Selside is now a registered historic building. The one at Thornton-in-Lonsdale, of Marmaduke Tatham et al., now longer exists.

††† I forget which will. Is it Item I give and bequeath unto Jane Wildman the wife of William Wildman of Selside 20 shilllings? GREENBANK, George of Ribblehead, Will and inventory 1679 ??

The Wildman Quaker Community

†† Matthew Wildman of Croasdale Grains popped-up on geni as a possible match. Naturally we can see that it is not. Nonetheless it does emphasize the bonds within the Wildman families as part of the Quaker movement . †† The Thomas Wilson family of Becroft might reveal an interesting story pertaining to Quaker dissent as well. An earlier Wilson of an earlier generation is close in pedigree to Mathew: ( Elizabetha Cragge ) To wit: Elizabetha Cragge (Wilson) is Matthew Wildman of Selside & Clapham's first cousin's wife's grandmother.
