His parents were Jan Tyssen (van Keulen) and Magdalena Blanchan.

Matthys married Annetjen Masten on May 1, 1712 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York, United States. Together they had the following children:

Jacobus Jansen;
David van Keuren;
Elizabeth van Keuren.

Matthys married Aaltje (Anna) Janssen (Elmendorf) on June 7, 1695 in Kingston Dutch Reformed Church, Ulster, New York, USA. Together they had the following children:
