Mattie Lee Elrod was born October 18, 1870 in Floyd County, Georgia, daughter of Isaac Philip Elrod and Elizabeth C. (Davis) Elrod.
On July 29, 1888, she married James "Jim" Dudley Pankhurst in Ewell, Upshur County, Texas. The children born into their Pankhurst family included an infant son (1890), Willie Lee, (1891), Roy Franklin (1894), Fannie Pearl (1897), James Scott (1899), Ruby Dee (1901), Walter Boyd (1904), Amye Lorene (1906), Jeffie Durene (1910) and Esther Elizabeth (1916) Pankhurst.
In September 1947, her husband preceded her in death.
On December 12, 1953, Mattie L. (Elrod) Pankhurst, age 83, died with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, LaFayette, Upshur County, Texas.
