Theosophy

The influence of Theosophy in the writing of L. Frank Baum (and those of her mother) is reflected int his analysis:
https://oz.fandom.com/wiki/The_Witchcraft_of_Mary-Marie
"Background
The story conforms to Baum's (and Matilda Joslyn Gage's) general metaphysic. At first, Mary-Marie believes that all witches are old, ugly, and evil; but her misapprehensions are quickly corrected. The connections between witches and Satan is dismissed as folly, as Baum's Theosophist religion did not allow the existence of such a character."

"The Witchcraft of Mary-Marie" is a short story by L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It was first published in the 1908 Bobbs-Merrill edition of Baum's American Fairy Tales, and was reprinted in the Autumn 1994 edition of The Baum Bugle, with new illustrations by Eric Shanower. The text can be read on the Hungry Tiger Press website. see: http://www.hungrytigerpress.com/tigertales/tigertale054.shtml
