Of Anglo-Irish descent, an active Irish nationalist and supporter of Irish arts. Refused W. B. Yeats's proposa of marriage.in 1891 (he later also proposed unsucessfully to her daughter, but as an actress took the leading roles in his plays, namely "Cathleen N. Houlihan" (1902).
