Maurice Souchon (1933 - 1998)

Brief overview:

Maurice (65), his wife Marie and son Daniel, lived on the farm Chiselhurst near Mandeni KZN. Around 12h00 on 22nd December 1998, while the Souchon couple were out, three attackers, two wearing balaclavas, overpowered Daniel and the domestic workers and held them hostage.

When Maurice and his wife arrived back home, they were ambushed. Maurice raised his hands to protect his wife, but was shot and wounded, fell down, and was shot dead, execution style, in the head.

    • Apart from the accused Mthembu having passed on the stolen cellphone after the attack, the case against him relied on his confession to the then commander of the investigation unit. The second accused had also confessed, but this time in the presence of a magistrate.
    • At the High Court trial, under Judge Combrink, the two accused claimed that the confessions had been made under duress after being assaulted by the police. After a trial-within-a-trial as to the admissibility of the confessions, the Judge ruled that they could be accepted. Both accused were found guilty and each was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and 30 years each for armed robbery.
