About Mayor Ephraim Willard Burr

Ephraim Willard Burr, 8th Mayor of the City & County of San Francisco

A native of Rhode Island, Burr came to San Francisco in 1850 where he would open a store. In 1854 he helped establish California's first savings bank, the San Francisco Accumulating Fund Association, which he would later serve as president of from 1857-1879 after it became the Savings & Loan Society. A strong advocate for the cleaning up of San Francisco after the death of his son from disease, he gained the support of the San Francisco Vigilance Committee and was elected the 9th Mayor of San Francisco in 1856-1859. In 1861 he founded the San Francisco Fire Insurance Company and served as its president until 1866.

American Trust Company, founded in 1854 as the San Francisco Accumulating Fund Association, was merged into Wells Fargo in 1960.

Ephraim Willard (Jonathan4, Jonathan3, Jacob2, George1); died at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts; born 20 April 1743 at Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; married Thankful Newell 1775.

Thankful Newell was born in 1750 at Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island. She died in 1812.

The only known child of Ephraim Willard and Thankful Newell was: Lucy Willard; born 1769 at Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island; who married Dr. Nathan Miller Burr in 1807; died 1823.

He died in San Francisco on July 20, 1894. His estate was valued at $6 million dollars.
