About Mayor Peter Delanoy

18th mayor of New York from 1688-1691. Peter Delanoy was the first directly elected mayor in New York City history--and the only one to hold that distinction until 1834 when the City Charter was changed. Delanoy was elected following Jacob Leisler's Rebellion, precipitated by the overthrow of King James II of England. Jacob Leisler was executed when the British regained control of the colony and the Governor appointed John Lawrence as Mayor of New York City.

De Lanoy was imprisoned in the Leisler affair after Jacob's execution but was released.
