MOTHER MATTOON MAN DIES IN CHARLESTON
Mrs. Melissa Ann Kearns, Mother of Charles Kearns of This City, Succombs Sunday.

Mrs. Melissa Ann Kearns, mother of Charles Kearns of this city, passed away at eleven o’clock on Sunday morning in the Montgomery sanitarium in Charleston. Mrs. Kearns, who was seventy-three years of age, had been to the hospital to submit to an operation for the amputation of one of her legs, which had become infected. However, her condition was such that the operation was deemed inadvisable. Death came in a short time.

Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ashmore cemetery.
Mrs. Kearns was born north of Oakland on August 20, 1843, and had lived all her life in that vicinity, Ashmore and Charleston. The husband, Silas Kearns, died ten years ago. Surviving are five sons and three daughters, John Kearns, Joseph Kerans and Samuel Kearns, Charleston; Charles Kearns, Mattoon; Grove Kearns, Bloomfield, Ind.; Mrs. Charles H. Crim, Charleston; Mrs. Mary Honn, Neoga; Mrs. Sallie Pollard, Charleston.
