About Merewalh, King of the Magonsætan
Although he presumably owned his position to his father Penda, he is described as "King" rather than sub-king by Goscelin, who wrote the life of Saint Mildburg. The only other reference to him, the author of the appendix to Florence of Worcester, also calls him King. (HPR Finburg, 'The Early Charters of the Wes Midlands" p. 217).
His daughter Saint Milburga left a will, which survives, referring to one of Penda's other sons as her uncle, so there is no doubt of his paternity.
