About Mildfrith, Sub-King of the Magonsaetan

Bishop Cuthbert of Hereford (whose episcopate lasted from 736 to 740) is known to have placed a memeorial inscription on Mildfrith's tomb which refers to him as "sub-king" ("sub-regulus) and to have named his wife. What is less clear is whether he was sub-king of his brother or whether he was demoted to sub-king after his brother's death as part of the incorporation of the Magonsaetan into Mercia. The latter seems more probable.
