About Michael Archbold
Corporal Michael Archbold, M.M.
Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 9th Battalion, Service No. 27247, formerly, Army Cyclist Corps, Service No. 10973.
Last Day in Action: He was killed in the Battle of Langemarck on 16 August 1917, age 23.
War Diary for 16 August 1917 at Frezenberg.
48 Brigade had the right attack, 9th Dublins with the 7th Irish Rifles on their left, 2nd Dublins behind in support. Casualties in the preceding two weeks had reduced the battalions by half or more. 8th Dublins, reduced to a company, were attached to the 2nd Dublins; their combined forces mustered only twenty officers and 378 men. At 0445 the attack began. To reach the objectives the battalions would have to cross nearly a mile of open ground dotted with pill box machine-gun posts and strong-points. Everywhere they were met by a withering blast off machine-gun fire. On the right the 9th Dublin Fusiliers suffered badly, but incredibly reached the Green Line and found touch with a battalion of 23rd Brigade, 8th. Regular Division.
