After graduating from the St. Petersburg 5th Gymnasium, and then St. Petersburg University in 1858, for some time he was a supernumerary teacher at the 2nd Gymnasium. In 1862 he went abroad. There, for two years, he first attended university courses in Berlin, worked in the laboratory of Professor Magnus, and then in Heidelberg under the guidance of Prof. Kirchhoff. In 1865 he returned to Kyiv, where he was appointed associate professor in the department of physics, and from 1866 - professor. He worked at Kiev University until 1890. All these years, he only occasionally left Kyiv, traveling abroad for scientific purposes, and in the last years of his life - to the village during the summer holidays to improve his health. Михаил Петрович Авенариус был сыном лютеранского пастора; родился в Царском Селе 7 (19) сентября 1835. Окончив Санкт-Петербургскую 5-ую гимназию, а затем Санкт-Петербургский университет в 1858 году, некоторое время состоял сверхштатным учителем 2-й гимназии. В 1862 году выехал за границу. Там в течение двух лет посещал сначала в Берлине университетские курсы, работал в лаборатории профессора Магнуса, а потом в Гейдельберге под руководством проф. Кирхгофа. В 1865 году возвращается в Киев, где назначен доцентом по кафедре физики, с 1866 году — профессор. В Киевском университете он проработал до 1890 года. Все эти годы он лишь изредка покидал Киев, выезжая с научными целями за границу, а в последние годы жизни — в деревню на время летних каникул для поправления здоровья. В одну из своих поездок в Германию он приобрел весьма ценную физическую библиотеку, в которой, между прочим, имеелся полный комплект «Annalen der Physik» — немецкого научного журнала, посвящённого проблемам физики. 1875 — организовал первую на Украине лабораторию экспериментальной физики и физический лабораторный практикум 1876 — избран членом-корреспондентом Петербургской Академии наук
