Hon. William Michael Berry, Baron Hartwell was born on 18 May 1911. He was the son of William Ewart Berry, 1st Viscount Camrose and Mary Agnes Corns. He married Lady Pamela Margaret Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead and Margaret Eleanor Furneaux, on 7 January 1936. He died on 3 April 2001 at age 89.

He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1933 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). He was editor of the Glasgow Sunday between 1934 and 1934. He was managing editor of the Financial Times between 1937 and 1939.

He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1938 in the service of the City of London Yeomanry 1938. He gained the rank of Captain in 1940. He gained the rank of Major. He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches twice. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1944.

He was invested as a Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1945. He was decorated with the award of the Territorial Decoration (T.D.). He wrote the book Party Choice, published 1948. He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1954 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).

He was chairman of Amalgamated Press between 1954 and 1959. He was chairman and editor-in-chief of the Daily Telegraph between 1954 and 1987. He was a trustee of Reuters between 1962 and 1989. He was director and deputy chairman of London Weekend Television between 1968 and 1981. 

He was created Baron Hartwell, of Peterborough Court in the City of London [U.K. Life Peer] on 19 January 1968. He wrote the book William Camrose, Giant of Fleet Street, published 1992. He was a director of Telegraph plc before 1995. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Camrose, of Hackwood Park, co. Southampton [U.K., 1941] on 15 February 1995. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Berry [U.K., 1921] on 15 February 1995. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Camrose, of Long Cross, co. Surrey [U.K., 1929] on 15 February 1995. He disclaimed the titles of Viscount and Baron Camrose and his baronetcy, for life.
