About Michael Gilchrist

My great grandfather was known to everyone as "Mr. Mike." He arrived from Scotland on 3 February 1913, becoming the first of our direct Gilchrist ancestors in the USA, and brought the rest of the family to East Rochester in October.

Although not a large man, he was, according to family stories, intimidating. He is said to have "ruled" in his household, and I know from what grandfather Frederick Hoto told me that it was a very long while indeed before Mr. Mike ever actually spoke to him when he and grandmother Pauline Mary Matheson Gilchrist). Nonetheless, he also had a warm side, as the same people who used to tell me how intimidating he could be also told me just how kind he was in many ways. My mother, Rose Hoto, was apparently his clear favorite: he taught her Gaelic which he would teach no one else, and then she and he would converse "secretly", much to the annoyance of the rest of her generation.

Mom (Rose Hoto) and Grandma (Mary Matheson Gilchrist) say that Mr. Mike also worked a farm in Scotland, and the Car Shops in East Rochester, NY. He and a number of other relatives performed a lot of the masonry work in the building of the First Presbyterian Church in East Rochester, NY, which was built in 1915.
