About the Gilchrist surname

This branch of the family wa s assigned the name "Gilchrist" courtesy of an immigration official, presumably in Southampton UK,where my grandfather arrived in around 1900. He spoke no Polish and my grandfather Lewis spoke no English, hence the failure of communication. The family name had been GLIKLICH and there were at least 236 people with that name living in the CZESTOCHOWA area between 1870 and 1930 ( All subsequent family members arriving in the UK took the name but those landing in the US retained their original name. Pogroms and general anti-semitism seemed to be the driving force behind the emigration from Poland to the USA and UK, with subsequent migration to South Africa and then remigration to the US, Australia and New Zealand.
