A member of the faculty of the Weizmann Institute of Science since 1950.

He was appointed professor in 1963 and founded the Department of Chemical Immunology. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Biology and the sixth President of the Institute (1975-1985).

He was active in many organizations in Israel and abroad, among them the Israel Society for Biochemistry (president), the Israeli Society for Immunology (chairman), as well as a member of the Budgeting and Planning Committee of the Council for Higher Education.

He acted as adviser to the World Health Organization and more. He was awarded the Israel Prize in Natural Sciences (1959) for his discovery of synthetic antigens. He also won the Rothschild Prize for Chemistry (1968), the Wolf Prize (1998) and the Belgian Baillet-Latour Health Prize (1997).

His research findings in the areas of immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology were published in more than 700 articles. In the field of drugs he invented Copaxone, the drug for treating multiple sclerosis, and he discovered the synergistic effect against cancer of an antibody and a chemotherapeutic drug.

He was among the first supporters of the Bat Sheva Dance Group and was deeply involved in the Arthur Rubinstein Master Piano Competition.

Michael Sela - מיכאל סלע‎) (born 2 March 1924) is an Israeli immunologist of Polish Jewish origin. He is W. Garfield Weston Professor of Immunology at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot.

Birth and academic career

Michael Sela was born as Mieczyslaw Solomonowicz in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland, in 1924. Today, he is Professor in the Weizmann Institute's Immunology Department.

Research

Sela is known for his research in immunology, particularly for research on synthetic antigens, molecules that trigger the immune system to attack. These work of Sela have led to the discovery of the genetic control of the immune response, as well as to the design of vaccines based on synthetic molecules.

He was among the first who introduced the use of linear and branched synthetic polypeptides as antigens, and this brought about a better understanding of immunological phenomena.

For several decades, Sela have been interested in the possibility of fighting the autoimmune disease, experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) with synthetic analogs of the molecules in the myelin sheath of the brain which are capable of provoking the disease.

He is probably best known as the co-developer (with Ruth Arnon and Dvora Teitelbaum) of the multiple sclerosis drug copaxone.

Dear campus community,

It is with immense sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of our dear friend, a preeminent scientist, and the sixth President of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Institute Professor Michael Sela. Michael passed away today surrounded by his loving family. He was 98. Throughout his illustrious career, Prof. Sela made numerous discoveries that forever changed the face of immunological research worldwide. Broadly speaking, he was a pioneer in approaching the immune system as a common denominator for treating and solving a wide range of diseases and conditions, by identifying and developing mechanisms that trigger—or block—immune response. Basic research insights from the Sela lab, in partnership with Weizmann colleagues, led to the development of Copaxone® for multiple sclerosis and major drugs for the treatment of various cancers.
Michael’s impact was felt well beyond his research bench. He was a leader and a role model for multiple generations of students and scientists on campus, and he undertook a long series of leadership roles. He was elected the Institute’s sixth President in 1975 and served for two terms. After stepping down a decade later, he continued to be actively engaged in campus leadership, serving on the Executive Council (which became the Executive Board) until his passing, and he was a Life Member of the International Board.
Michael and his wife Sara were pillars of the Weizmann campus community, and, as ardent and generous supporters of music and the arts, their home on campus became an epicenter of the Israeli social and cultural scene, and Institute events. They generously supported the Weizmann Institute, funding both science and cultural activities, including the renovation of the Michael Sela Auditorium.
On a personal note, since my first days as a young scientist at the Institute – coming from a different discipline and belonging to a different generation – I deeply admired Michael and drew inspiration from his life’s work. When I became President, I had the good fortune of consulting with him many times, always getting sound advice ingrained with years of experience – and always delivered with a human and personal touch.
Prof. Michael Sela will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on for years to come, and we can all take inspiration from his extraordinary passion, sharp intellect, and vision.
Please join me in sending our deepest condolences to his wife Sara, daughters Irit, Orlee, and Tamar, and the entire Sela family.

מיכאל סלע (2 במרץ 1924 - 27 במאי 2022) היה ביוכימאי, פרופסור לאימונולוגיה ונשיאו השישי של מכון ויצמן למדע.

קורות חיים

סלע נולד בשם מייצ'יסלב סלמונוביץ בטומאשוב מאזובייצקי (Tomaszow Mazowiecki) שבפולין. בשנת 1935 עבר עם משפחתו לבוקרשט שברומניה, ממנה עלה לארץ ישראל בשנת 1941. באותה שנה, החל בלימודי כימיה באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים. בסיום לימודי התואר השני, בשנת 1946, למד באוניברסיטת ז'נבה במשך כשנה ועבד בשירות ההעפלה באיטליה. בשנים 1948–1950 עבד כנספח מסחרי בצירות ישראל בצ'כוסלובקיה, ולאחר מכן שב לישראל והצטרף למכון ויצמן.

סלע היה חבר סגל במחלקה לביופיזיקה בין השנים 1950–1963, לצד סיום עבודת הדוקטורט (1954). בשנים 1956–1957, ובשנית בין 1960–1961, שהה לצורכי מחקר במכונים הלאומיים לבריאות של ארצות הברית. בשנת 1960 הוא הועלה לדרגת פרופסור חבר ובשנת 1963 לפרופסור מן המניין וראש החוג לכימיה אימונולוגית.

בשנת 1968, לאחר שובו משנת שבתון באוניברסיטת קליפורניה בברקלי, מונה סלע לראש המחלקה לאימונולוגיה. בתפקיד זה הוא כיהן עד מינויו כנשיא השישי של מכון ויצמן למדע, בשנת 1975. במקביל הוא כיהן גם כדיקן הפקולטה לביולוגיה (1970–1973) וסגן נשיא המכון (1970–1971). לתפקיד הנשיא נבחר לשתי כהונות וכיהן בתפקיד במשך עשר שנים, עד נובמבר 1985, ולאחריו כיהן כסגן יושב ראש מועצת המנהלים של המכון (1986–1994).

לאורך השנים כיהן סלע בתפקידים מקצועיים וציבוריים רבים ובהם: נשיא האגודה הישראלית לביוכימיה (1964–1966), יושב ראש האגודה הישראלית לאימונולוגיה (1968–1972), חבר המועצה להשכלה גבוהה, יו"ר הקרן על שם עמוס דה-שליט (1976–1987), המדען הראשי של המרכז הרפואי של ניו אינגלנד במסצ'וסטס (1986–1987), נשיא המועצה המשותפת של מכון פסטר בפריז ומכון ויצמן (1989–1995), וכן כיועץ מקצועי לארגון הבריאות העולמי, לאונסק"ו ולארגון האירופי לביולוגיה מולקולרית.

חלקו של סלע בגילוי תרופת הקופקסון לטיפול בטרשת נפוצה, יחד עם רות ארנון ודבורה טייטלבאום, הביא לזכייתו בפרס ישראל למדעי החיים (1959), בפרס רוטשילד לכימיה (1968) ובפרס וולף (1998) . נבחר כחבר זר של האקדמיה האמריקאית לאמנויות ולמדעים בשנת 1971. נוסף לכך הוא חבר כבוד בארגונים בישראל ובעולם בתחומי המדעים והרפואה. במהלך השנים התפרסמו מטעמו למעלה מ-700 מאמרים בתחומי האימונולוגיה, הביוכימיה והביולוגיה המולקולרית.

בבחירות לכנסת ה-17 מוקם סלע במקום ה-120 הסמלי ברשימת מפלגת קדימה לכנסת. החל משנת 1991 מיכאל סלע היה חבר כבוד באקדמיה הרומנית. פעילותו בישראל נרחבת גם בתחומי התרבות והוא נמנה בין תומכיה הראשונים של להקת המחול "בת שבע". סלע אף עמד בראש נשיאות התנועה למען איכות השלטון בישראל. בשנת 2009 הוענק לסלע תואר לשם כבוד מהמסלול האקדמי המכללה למינהל. ב-2011 זכה בתואר מפקד בלגיון הכבוד הצרפתי.

סלע היה נשוי לשרה, דיילת לשעבר ולהם בת משותפת ולו עוד שתי בנות מנישואיו הראשונים למרגלית, ובנוסף יש לו בן חורג מנישואיה הראשונים של שרה המשמש כטייס בחיל האוויר.

נפטר ב 27 למאי 2022, בגיל 98, מוקף בבני משפחתו

קהילת מכון ויצמן היקרה,

בצער גדול אני כותב לכם הערב כדי להודיע על פטירתו של ידידנו היקר, מדען פורץ דרך והנשיא השישי של מכון ויצמן למדע, פרופסור מיכאל סלע. מיכאל נפטר הערב מוקף במשפחתו האוהבת. הוא היה בן 98 במותו.

לאורך הקריירה המפוארת שלו, מחקרו של פרופ' סלע הוליד תגליות רבות ששינו את פני המחקר האימונולוגי ברחבי העולם. מחקריו שפכו אור על מנגנוני הבקרה של פעולת המערכת החיסונית והולידו תחומי ידע חדשים באימונולוגיה. תובנות המחקר הבסיסי שנערך במעבדתו של פרופ' סלע, בשיתוף עם עמיתים מהמכון, הובילו לפיתוח תרופת ה- ®Copaxone לטרשת נפוצה ותרופות מצליחות נוספות לטיפול בסוגי סרטן שונים.

תרומתו והשפעתו של מיכאל חצו את גבולות המחקר שלו. הוא היה מנהיג ומודל לחיקוי עבור דורות רבים של סטודנטים ומדענים בקמפוס, והוא לקח על עצמו שורה ארוכה של תפקידים בהנהגת המכון ומחוצה לו. הוא נבחר לנשיא השישי של המכון ב-1975, תפקיד בו כיהן במשך שתי קדנציות. לאחר שסיים את כהונתו השנייה, המשיך מיכאל לעסוק באופן פעיל בהנהגת הקמפוס, ובין היתר כיהן בוועד המנהל (שהפך למועצת המנהלים) עד לכתו, וכן נבחר לחבר במועצה הבינלאומית למשך כל חייו.

מיכאל ורעייתו שרה היו מעמודי התווך של קהילת קמפוס מכון ויצמן, ובתור תומכים נלהבים ונדיבים של מוזיקה ואמנויות, הפך ביתם בקמפוס למוקד חברתי ותרבותי ואירח אירועי מכון רבים. הם תמכו בנדיבות גם במכון ויצמן, ותרמו למען פעילויות מדע ותרבות כאחד, לרבות שיפוץ אודיטוריום מיכאל סלע.

בנימה אישית, מאז ימיי הראשונים כמדען צעיר במכון – אשר מגיע מתחום מחקר שונה ושייך לדור אחר - הערצתי מאד את מיכאל ושאבתי השראה ממפעל חייו. כשהפכתי לנשיא, התמזל מזלי להיוועץ בו פעמים רבות, וליהנות מתובנותיו המבוססות על שנים רבות של ניסיון אותן דאג לחלוק תמיד באופן אנושי ואישי.

פרופ' מיכאל סלע יחסר מאוד לכל מי שהכיר אותו. מורשתו תמשיך להאיר עוד שנים רבות, וכולנו נמשיך לשאוב השראה מהתשוקה יוצאת הדופן, מהאינטלקט החד ומהחזון שלו.

אנו שולחים את תנחומינו הכנים לרעייתו שרה, לבנותיו אירית, אורלי ותמר ולכל משפחת סלע.

סלע ללא מחלוקת
הלך לעולמו הפרופסור מיכאל סלע - חתן פרס ישראל ונשיא מכון וייצמן בדימוס, ומי שעמד בראש הצוות המדעי שהביא לעולם את תרופת הקופקסון, והוא שבע ימים בן 98. עם זאת פועלו בלשון רבים היה ארוך אפילו מאורך חייו.
מה לא ייאמר עליו? מדען. האיש שלא נפרד מן המעבדה. כותב המאמרים הנפוצים ברחבי העולם כולו בפעילותו במכון וייצמן ולא פחות מכך בפרישתו לגמלאות. במהות לא פרש מעולם.
העמיד תלמידים הרבה כמצוות בית הלל. אוהב אדם. הומניסט. חובב ספרות. במעקב צמוד אחרי החיים הפוליטיים בישראל.
פעל עם רעייתו שרה כנדבן רחב לב וברוחב יד. לא כלא עצמו במגדל השן ברחובות. פניו היו גם לעולם הריקוד. התיאטרון. כל אמנות שנקרתה בדרכו. תמיד עם עוד ספר. עוד מאמר. עוד שיח עם חברים.
איש טוהר המידות. אויב השחיתות. נתן את שמו לתפקיד בעל תואר רם בתנועה לאיכות השלטון.
לפני זמן מה הקדישו שרה ומיכאל את יום הולדתו האחרון במכון וייצמן למפגש משותף עם התנועה לאיכות השלטון. בעיקרו של דבר החיבור בין מדע לבין יושרה היה פרק חשוב בחייו.
חייו של סלע היו כה מגוונים, שאיני זוכר התכנסות מני רבות בה לא חדר אל ליבת הנושא ולא העיר או שאל בבהירות שמעולם לא השלימה עם ערפול. הוא היה נזיר מכל קירבה ל"בערך" ו"לא בדיוק" ו"יהיה בסדר".
במורשת היהודית נזכר, שכל עוד למדו תלמידיו של עורך המשנה רבי יהודה הנשיא סביב מיטתו בעודו דואב לא עלה בידי מלאכי השמים, האראלים, ליטול את נשמתו. מדי פעם נזכרתי באגדה זו בשנותיו האחרונות של סלע. סקרנותו העירנית לתחומים כה רבים בחיים האנושיים האריכה את ימיו. בזה אני משוכנע.
מה במילה אחת גולת הכותרת של חייו? סקרנות? איכות? התמדה? הומניזם? כל מכריו שהם גם כל מוקיריו - הא בהא תליא, שני צידיה של אותה משוואה מתמטית - יבחרו לעצמם איזה ערך מבין אלה ראשון בעיניהם.
מיכאל סלע נגס בתפוח שקטף מעץ החיים. הוא אכל את מלוא התפוח מעץ הדעת. מי שמאמין כי יש גן עדן אי שם במרומים יודע כי הוא כבר שם.
