Figlio di un Michele che, secondo gli eruditi veneziani dei secoli XVI-XVIII, fu podestà di Faenza nel 1240 e, sempre secondo fonti erudite, di Agnese Corner del fu Andrea, appartenne al ramo poi denominato «dalla Sbarra».
