WRECK OF THE BRIG AUSTRALIA - The following are the particulars of the loss of the brig Australia at Cape Campbell, from the NZ Herald: - The brog Scotsman brings intelligence of the wreck, with loss of all hands. The brig Australia was bound from newcastle, for Timaru, with a cargo of coal. Captain Rogers, of the Scotsman, reports that he left Newcastle on Monday the 13th. On the 23rd passed Cape Campbell in company with the brig Australia. The wind was then blowing a gale from the north-west. A terrific gale set in and the brig was forced to bear up for Cook's Straits in company with the brig Australia, which was running with every sail set. The main topsail burst, and they had to cut it away in order to save the yards, and also for the safety of the ship. The wind was blowing a furious hurricane. At 6 pm the foresail sheet carried away; clewed up and cut the fragments adrift; the fore-topmast-staysail was in ribbons. The ship broached to on the starboard tack, and was pooped by a heavy sea, which made a clean breach, smashing bulwarks &c. The deck was full of water - everything loose was thrown overboard. At 7 pm got a new fore-topmast and staysail set, and ran the ship before the wind, Cape Campbell light bearing north-west. Saw a green light passing about a mile inside, supposed to be the brig Australia. At 6.30 pm rounded Cape Campbell; the gale abated, the wind falling light at midnight. Ay 3 am next morning one of the men aloft reported he saw something floating on the lee bow. At 10 am saw it was the wreck of a ship. Got out a boat and sent her with the mate and four men to ascertain what the wreck was. On their return they reported that it was the brig Australia. Ran brig Scotsman alongside the wreck and made fast, but was only able to secure the mainmast. The brig Australia was owned and commanded by Captain Craig. The crew numbered ten hands.

Sydney Morning Herald Wed 27 Aug 1873 p. 1
DEATHS.
On the 3rd June, lost off Cape Campbell, in the brig Australia, MILES LAKE, native of Windsor, New South Wales, leaving a large circle of friends and one child to mourn their loss.
