Snohomish Public Library Notes Flying Chunk Hits and Kills Logger; Companion is Hurt--Tightened Line Slingshot for Log; Victim Experienced in Work
A chunk of wood unexpectedly tossed by a tightening cable struck and killed Milford Thomas, 32, Monday afternoon at the Monroe Logging camp. A crew was moving a yarding donkey. The lines were out, workmen said, apparently all in the clear. The whip as one of the lines was drawn tight picked up the chunk about 30 feet from Thomas, an experienced woods worker, and sent it hurtling his direction. It hit his head and he died with a few minutes. M. Dutcher, 30, Snohomish, was working beside him and was also hit, although his injuries consisted of minor bruises and cut. Dutcher was head slinger and Thomas a hooker-up on the crew. The accident was regarded by other workmen as a rare one in the woods.
Thomas lived with his mother and daughter at Machias. Surviving members of the family are the daughter, Betty; mother, Mrs. Daisy Thomas; nine sisters, Mrs. Ole Roe, Cicero; Mrs. Ed Gemmer, Machias; Mrs. Frank Kurtz, Laurel Heights; Mrs. Clarence Jacobson, Bellingham; Mrs. Leslie Vail, Snohomish; Mrs. Harry Arendt, Everett; Mrs. Walter Carlson, Machias; Shirley and Jean Thomas, and a brother, James, all of Machias.
The body was taken to the Auseth funeral parlors in Everett, where it awaits funeral arrangements.
