Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the home of her son, Alvin Nelson, six miles north of the city. An obituary will appear in the Journal next week. Gordon Journal, March 4, 1937 page 1 column 6 MILLIE HOPKINS NELSON Millie Hopkins, daughter of the late Crandal and Thankful Hopkins was born at Tilden, Antelope county, Nebraska, July 13, 1870 and departed this life at her home near Gordon February 23, 1937, at the age of 66 years 7 months and 10 days. On December 14, 1892 she was united in marriage to Chris Nelson at Tilden, Nebraska. To this union nine children were born; Amos of St. Louis, Mo., Roy of Murphy, Oregon, Alvin of Gordon, Nebraska, Marvin of Denby, S. D., Mrs. Leona Coulthard of Hope, Idaho, Clifford Gardner and Carlyle of Omaha, Nebraska, and Bernard of Yakima, Washington. Ten years ago she listened to the Gospel preached by John Good and Walter Denherdler. She choose to become a follower of Christ and live for eternal values. While we are saddened by her death, yet we rejoice that she fought a good fight unto the end. Though she now rests from her labors her life still lives and speaks to those who knew her. Her death came as a shock to relatives and friends as she had been recovering nicely from a fractured limb received about a month ago. Besides the devoted husband and children she leaves to morn her death seventeen grandchildren, one brother, Andy Hopkins of Neligh, Nebraska, and one sister Mrs. Lidia Minkler of Oakdale, Nebraska, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the home of her son, Alvin Nelson, last Saturday and burial was made in the Gordon Cemetery.
May of 1986 I decided to write to all the people in Gordon, Nebraska with the Surname of Nelson to see if I could find someone who could help me find information on my father's family. Letter postmarked June 9, 1986 from Elwood or Helen M. Nelson {brother & sister}, HC 64, Box 18, Gordon, Nebraska 69343--Two of the letters reached brother's of Helen Nelson who knew my grandmother Millie and her family. Excerpts from letter.."We are Nelson's but no relation and lived just 2 miles north of Alvin Nelson. Alvin has a daughter named Helen and my name is Helen-we went to same school-so they called me big Helen & her little Helen. When your dad's parents weren't to good-the time Millie had broken leg, I worked for them. They went to the same church my mother went to. We were acquainted with the family for years...Your dad was quite a guy. I even went with him a few times. When he worked for Helen Nelson Swaynes dad Alvin.
