Mohamed Engar (1946 – 2013)
Brief overview:
Mohammad Engar (67), and his wife Razia (56), were brutally attacked and tortured, by five males, on their sugar cane farm Noordhulp, in Winterton, on 5th December 2013. Their domestic worker, Nonhlanhla Gumede (31), prayed earnestly for her employers and herself. Mohammad was beaten, stabbed and tortured with a hot iron during a two-hour ordeal. Razia sustained burn mark on her legs, a stab wound to her back and a bloodied face.
One of their farm workers, Fortunate Hlongwane, was shot twice in the stomach and leg. He survived and was later taken to hospital
Nonhlanhla was threatened with rape, and her life would be spared if she had sex with them. She told them she had her menstrual cycle, which she believes saved her from being raped.
When the police arrived, Nonhlanhla went to check in the room where Mohammad was. “He was covered in blood, the lower part of his legs had no skin and he was struggling to breathe. I’ll never forget that night,” said Gumede.
Mohammad died in hospital. Razia survived, but suffers from memory loss from her ordeal.
The perpetrators ransacked the house, stealing cellphones, a CCTV recording machine, clothing and a car which was later recovered.
Seven men were arrested.
