The birth records of Moises's son Markus (1862) are the only sources that attribute to Moises a father named "Markus Benesch," or indeed any father at all. All other records that mention his parentage say only that he was the son of Ludmila Benesch, thus implying that his birth was illegitimate. The only Beneš/Benesch of the name of "Markus" attested to have lived in the time and place in which Moises was born is Markus Benesch, the Familiant. For Moises to have been a son of this Markus, Markus would have had to take a second wife late in life, and Moises would have been the uncle of his wife Johanna. It is far more likely that Moises was not the son but the grandson of Markus, his mother being Markus's daughter Ludmila. On this hypothesis, Moises and his wife Johanna were first cousins. However, the evidence amassed so far does not suffice to resolve the matter. —M.R.
