About Dr. Moritz Mannheimer

GEDCOM Note

Dr. Moritz Mannheimer studied medicine and graduated in 1833/34 in Munich. He practiced medicine in the village of Moenschroth, Bavaria, where several of his children were born. On September 9, 1853 he asked to be assigned as a hospital physician in Dinkelsbuehl due to the fact that he had 8 children to educate in addition to the stress on his health as a general practitioner.

His request was granted and took effect on October 1, 1853 with an annual salary of 150 guldens and 3 loads of wood to be delivered to the door. The survivors would not be eligible for a pension. He practiced until his death on May 28, 1861 when his death was reported to the government of middle Franconia. In June his widow Johanna requested assistance of the municipal authorities. On June 22, 1861 she was awarded a pension which she received until she emigrated to the United States.

The day before his death he wrote to his children in America the following letter:

Dinkelsbuehl, 27 May 1861
Dearly beloved children Mina, Louis, Gottfried, Robert and Emil,

In what I think may be the hour of my death, I beg you most solemnly not to depart from the path of virtue and righteousness, and I implore you all to honor highly your dearest mother who devoted so much love to you and who sacrificed much for the purpose of your education, with the exception of dear Louis*, and who has made great sacrifices for your father, and to keep her in high honor [two illegible words].

Be all of you greeted and kissed, including my [something missing] if you want to make me happy in my grave. Farewell and live happily is what your true loving father wishes you.
