About Morris Matson

'Biography'

By Josef Carlsson

Morris Mattson was born about 1716 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Hewas the son of John Matson, Sr. and Margaret (name uncertain) of Upper Merion, Chester Co.

Morris first lived in Tredyffrin in 1739 according to tax records. He married Mary (maiden name unknown) about 1740. She was born about 1714 in Aston Twp, Chester Co. He later lived in the vicinity of Conshohocken, Delaware Co., PA. Mattson's Ford Rd runs from the southeast into West Conshohocken where the Mattson relatives owned an early ford across the Schuykill River.

Morris and Mary had ten children. Mary died 18 December 1759 at Edgemont, Chester, PA, and was buried at St. David's Church, Radnor, Delaware, PA. Morris then married Margaret Hill in 1764/65, a recent widow of Thomas Yarnall. They had had two children, Mary (b. 1852) and Abigail (b. 1859)

Morris died 5 June 1776 at Village Green, Chester, PA and is buried at St. David's Episcopal Church next to his wife, Mary. Their gravestones, still standing today, are in a private courtyard under a huge spruce tree. Because there are many tombstone nearby with the surnames Evans and Moore, it is believed Mary's maiden name might have been either of the two.
