About Moses Coates

DAR# A023407

Moses Coates was the son of Samuel Coates and wife Elizabeth Mendenhall. He was born in 1748 in Chester County, Pennsylvania and died in 1816. He is buried at East Caln Friends Burying Ground. He married twice and had thirteen children between the two marriages.

Moses married Hannah Musgrave, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Musgrave.Thomas was an Irish Quaker who had settled in Sadsbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Hannah was born in 1752, married Moses in 1770 and died in 1775 from a 'nervous fever.' She was buried at East Caln Friends Burying Ground. Moses and Hannah had two daughters, Elizabeth and Hannah.

After Hannah’s death, Moses married Mary Knight Vickers, daughter of Peter and Ann Vickers. She was born in 1750 and died in 1824. She was buried in Marlborough, Stark County, Ohio. Moses and Mary had eleven children.

From the Bradford MM minutes of 1770, we find that Moses requested as certificate to Exeter to marry Hannah, which was granted. In 1777, Moses requested a certificate to Buckingham MM for marriage with Mary. Moses acquired a large tract of land that later became Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He was the first postmaster of the township in 1812. He helped to lay out the town and gave it the name. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coatesville,_Pennsylvania
