About Moses Mendenhall

Moses appears in the Quaker Birth Digest "M" page in the Friends House, London as the 4th son born a Quaker to Thomas and Joan Minall of Marridge Hill, Ramsbury, Wilts. England. The eldest son, Thomas IV born c1657 was not Quaker registered and died in the Church of England. Moses' birth record says he was born on 9/24/1666, not Nov. 24.

Before coming to America, Moses bought 500 acres of land along the Brandywine River on Sept. 5, 1685 from John Ewen, whose brother, Roger, bought them from William Penn on June 20, 1682. Moses never requested a survey for this land. He came to America in 1682 but did not like the primitive lifestyle of the American colonists and stayed in PA only somewhat more than a year. However, before he left PA he had sumitted an application for land in the province. Some of the land for which Moses Mendenhall had made application was located in what is now Kennett Township near the Delaware line, where the affluent suburban area of Mendenhall can now be found.

In a letter of July 28, 1687 from William Hitchcock of Marlborough, England, to John and Amy Harding, John Kingsman and his wife and ye widow, Beezer in PA, William Hitchcock mentions that Moses agreed to buy land but then had not gone back to PA because his mother did not want him to go and the cost of the land was to high. Moses Mendenhall conveyed his land in PA to his brothers, John and Benjamen, and to his sisters Margery Martin and Mary Newland. Of this land, 125 acres were located on the east side of Brandywine Creek at the forks and the remaining 375 acres in Kennett Township.

IMPORTANT==The use of the surname Mendenhall came about by the immigration of Thomas children John and Benjamin Mildenhall to the United States. From that point the spelling of Mendenhall was used for John and Benjamin and their descendants. Moses unlike his brothers John and Benjamin returned to England and continued using the Mildenhall spelling.
