About Most Rev. William White, 1st Bishop of Philadelphia

The Most Reverend William White was the first and fourth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, USA (1789; 1795–1836), the first Bishop of the Diocese of Pennsylvania (1787–1836), and the second United States Senate Chaplain (appointed December 9, 1790). He also served as the first and fourth President of the House of Deputies for the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. (1785, 1789)

Bishop William White was the rector of Christ Church ( 2nd street above Market) and Bishop of the diocese. He is buried at the altar of Christ Church. His family is interred in the Church yard on the Northwest corner.

Religious Leader. He was an organizer of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America in 1785. White served as the Rector of Christ Church and St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1779 until his death in 1836. In 1786 he was elected as the First Episcopal Bishop of Pennsylvania and served until his death in 1836.
