Mourning Glenn Jouette

Mourning was d/o Maj. Robert Overton Harris & Mourning Glenn of Brown's Cove, Albemarle Co VA. Robert Harris was one of the early settlers on Doyle' s River, where he obtained patents for approximately three thousand acres, his first entry having been made in 1750. His death took place in 1765. Robert Harris and his wife Mourning had ten children: (1) Christopher, (2) Robert Jr., (3) Tyree, (4) James, (5) William, (6) Lucy the wife of William Shelton, (7) Sarah the wife of John Rodes and the wife of William Dalton, (8) Mourning the wife of John "Jack" Jouett Jr., aka "the Paul Revere of the South" (9) Elizabeth the wife of William Crawford, and mother of William H. Crawford - U.S. Senator from Georgia, Minister to France, Secretary of the Treasury under President Monroe, and a prominent candidate for the Presidency in 1824 (The History of Albemarle County Virginia p 221., Rev Edgar Woods 1901)

Robert was a Captain in the Revolutionary service, and removed to Surry County, North Carolina. William died early in 1776, and Christopher in 1794. James died in 1792. He and his wife Mary had ten children, Thomas, Joel, Nathan, James, Lucy the wife of Thomas Grubbs, Mourning, the wife of Cornelius Maupin, Sarah the wife of James Harrison, Susan the wife of Nicholas Burnley, Ann the wife of a Haden [Anthony the younger], and Jane the wife of a Dabney.

1) Capt Matthew Jouett : born about 1753. He was a Captain in the 7th Virginia Regiment Continental Army, where he fought the British at the Battle of Monmouth and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. He died 2 months later, on 17 Nov 1777. Matthew is not known to have married. Land Office Warrant, #463, was for his military service and entitled him or his heir(s) to receive 4000 acres of land in Kentucky. His brother, Captain Jack Jouett, was his legal heir.

2) John “Jack” Jouett Jr.: born 7 Dec 1754/Louisa Co VA, died 1 Mar 1822/Bath Co KY. Was a Captain in the Virginia Militia, aka "The Paul Revere of the South". Moved to Kentucky in 1782; attended the Danville Separation Convention in 1788 and helped bring Kentucky to statehood in 1792; elected to serve citizens from Lincoln/Mercer & Woodford Counties in the Virginia & Kentucky State House of Representatives. Married Sally Robards and had 12 children: George Payne Jouett 1785-1811...Catherine Jouett 1787-1790... 3) Capt Robert Jouett: b. 1756, d. 1796, m. Alice Lewis was d/o Benjamin Lewis & Martha Beckerton. A Captain in the Revolution and wounded at Eutaw Springs, South Carolina; he received land grant for military service of 2,666.67 acres located in Ohio (warrant #2673). Was Major in the 88th Regiment, First Battalion of Albemarle County Militia and became a Colonel of Artillery, Second Division of same regiment. In 1783 he was admitted to Albemarle County Bar. Robert was the only son who stayed in Virginia. Robert & Alice had 1 child: Alice Robert Jouett (1795-1823) m. James Wood Bouldin (1792-1854). James was an attorney in Charlottesville, a member of the U.S. Congress, son of Major Wood Bouldin of the Revolution (1742-1800) and Joanna Tyler (1752-1845), an aunt of President Tyler.

4) Mary Ann "Mourning" (Jouett) Allin: m. to Thomas Allin.

5) Charles Jouett: born 1772, d 1834. Captain with the 47th Reg., 2nd Div. Studied Law and admitted to Albemarle Bar in 1796. Indian Agent for U.S. Govt in Northwest Territory. 1m. Elizabeth Dodemead on 22 Jan 1803 at Detroit. They had one child in Detroit: ... Jane Harris Jouett:(1804-1837/Christian Co KY) m. 3 Sep 1823/Trigg Co KY to Samuel Northington 2m. "Deed dated 23 Jun 1746... Susanna Jouett, widow of Matthew Jouett, sells land part of which was patented by James Watson and another part was sold to Benjamin Henson. Wit: Robert Lewis, Joel Terrel, Thomas Perkins. Deed dated 24 Apr 1758... John Jouett and wife Mourning Jouett sell land in which his mother, the widow of Matthew Jouett, holds dower rights. Deed dated 10 Aug 1762... Deed of Matthew Jouett and John Jouett, sons of Matthew Jouett, decd. Land adjoins the road of Mr. Venable, John Powers, Mr. Ambler and Mr. Smith. Deed dated 8 Aug 1762...
