About Mungo Mure

MUNGO MURE (aka KENTIGERN MUR or MONGO MURE)

Mungo Mure is the son of John Mure of Rowallan and his wife Marion Cunningham. Identified as Kentigern Mure, he is noticed the the company of his older brother William Mure, younger of Rowallan, on 30 June 1582. NRS: GD3/1/7/18/5

The Murder of Hugh, Earl of Eglinton

Mungo Mure was implicated in the murder of Hugh Montgomery, the fourth Earl of Eglinton. Historie: 82 It is not clear if his father, John Mure of Rowallan, was involved, or if he conspired with the murderers in the lead up to the cruel slaughter of the young earl, but it seems to have troubled him greatly. So much so that he felt compelled to deny any involvement when he was lying on his death bed: "Anent the slauchtr of hew erle of eglintoun [he] declairis on his consience befoir god to quhome he man mak compt tht he was nayt airt nor pt on the [cousall] nor fornawlege of the same". His Father's Last Will and Testament

Mungo Mure is mentioned in his father's last will and testament dated 14 April 1591, where his father transferred the liferent Mungo was enjoying to his mother: "Item [John Mure of Rowallan] ordaines the lyfrent escheit of his sone Mongo Mure to be usit be his said wyff [Marion Cunningham] induring the tyme of his now being the kingis man and tht be the advyse of his bairnes". 30 June 1582: Contract between Alexander Mur, Robert Mur in Woll, his brother and Kentigern Mur son of John Mure of Rowallan his curators for their interest on the one part and William Mur, younger of Rowallan on the other part whereby Alexander Mur with the consent of his curators agrees to sell to William Mur the foresaid lands Dated at Glasgow. [no date but before 1591]: Instrument bearing that John Mure of Rowallan and Marion Cunningham his wife for the sum of 200 merks resigned in the hands of Hugh Cunningham prebendary of Kilmaurs as procurator for Alexander Earl of Glencairn, all right which the said John Mure and Marion Cunningham had to the 5 merk land of Davidston lying in the barony of Finlayston formerly wadset by the Earl.
