About Murton Oxendine

Murton was the son of James Anderson and Sarah Margaret Oxendine. He married Irene Branch on Nov. 11, 1911 in the Thompson section of Robeson County, North Carolina.

The following was taken from the Apr. 11, 1955 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

Funeral services for Merton Oxendine were held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the New Bethel Methodist church; rites were conducted by Rev. Venus Brooks, assisted by Rev. L. W. Jacobs. Burial was in New Bethel cemetery.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Irene Jacobs Oxendine; four daughters, Miss Sallie Oxendine of the home, Mrs. Keith Bristow, Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Bobby Lowry, Maxton, Mrs. Myrtle Berry, Maxton; four sons, Thaddis, Wilton, Alfred, and Denver Oxendine, all of Robeson county; 18 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Hubert, C.W., Vernon, Lawrence, Prather, and Earl Oxendine.

Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Plummer Locklear.

Music was presented by a quartet from the Mt. Olive Holiness church, composed of Paul C. Maynor, Miss Athelia Maynor, and Mmes Otis Brayboy and Hubert Oxendine.

  • **NOTE: According to his NC death certificate, he died in 1955, and he was buried at New Bethel Holiness Methodist in Rowland, NC--where his parents were also buried. However, he currently shares a headstone with his wife at Harper's Ferry. Inscription:
