Lawrence was the son of James Anderson, Sr. and Sarah Margaret (Oxendine) Oxendine. His first marriage was to Martha Hunt on Dec. 22, 1901 in Thompson, NC.

The following was taken from the Aug. 14, 1951 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

Rev. L. A. Oxendine, 70, of Red Springs, was claimed by death at one o'clock this morning at his home. Rev. Oxendine died of a sudden heart attack.

He was the presiding elder of the Lumber River Methodist church. Funeral services have been set for 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Bethel Methodist church with Rev. J. R. Lowry officiating.

Rev. Oxendine is survived by his wife, Mrs. Addie Oxendine; three sons, Lawrence, Jr., Leander, and Sam; five daughters, Mrs. Marrion Hunt of Fairmont, Pearlie Oxendine, Mrs. Zeprah Oxendine of Pembroke, Mrs. Ester Locklear of Red Springs, and Mrs. Cleates Locklear of Rennert; and two brothers, Archie and Martin Oxendine.
