Myer or Meyer Goverman was born in Kishinev Moldova. He was originally from Carnesti, and at one time it was in Roumania and then the Russian Empire.
He became a baker and at one time opened 12 bakeries around Baltimore City.
He may have been a farmer in Russia. He entertained his children of stories of the pogroms he experienced from the old country.
At one time he had a wagon and a very smart horse who knew all the stops by heart to wherever he was going. He never forgot that horse.
My grandfather gave me my first job in his bakery when I was 14 years old.
He was very smart, street-smart, he was very spiritual. Very religious. He believed that God will take care of us and we should leave everything up to God to take care of. He was very feisty and stubborn..
He used to bake little challah breads and very little chocolate cakes for me and my brother for Shabbos.
But my Zadie had a temper too. Not directed at us but at situations. He could curse in Yiddish and knew a lot of curse phases which he didn't mind sharing with us!
