Nancy was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Nancy Ann Hair was born in the Cherokee Nation about 1829. Her parents were Susannah Reese and James Hair.

As a nine year old girl she walked the Trail of Tears from the east to Indian Territory in the west when the Cherokee were removed in 1838.

Her family (mother, Susanah Reese Brown) settled in the Sequoyah District along Lee's Creek after their arrival in Indian Territory.

She married young to William Campbell and had her first child, Clarimore Campbell, in about 1847/48.

About 1850 Nancy married Joseph Seabolt, who with his family had also left the Cherokee Nation in the east and arrived in Indian Territory in 1835.

Over the next twenty-five years Nancy and Joseph lived along Lee's Creek and became parents to at least seven children, five of whom reached adulthood: Sarah Ellen Seabolt Swimmer; Josiah Fields Seabolt; James Madison Seabolt (Uncle Cussie); Timothy Emerson Seabolt; and Anderson Benge Seabolt.

Joseph died in 1890. Nancy lived another twenty-four years in the same home along Lee's Creek. All of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren lived nearby and cared for her. There are now five generations of Joseph and Nancy's descendants (and her mother, Susanah Brown) buried in the Seabolt Cemetery along Lee's Creek where she was laid to rest in 1914 at the age of 85 years.
