1850 White county, TN : shows Nancy listed as Head of House.

1860 DeKalb county, TN : shows Nancy Mainor, age 54, born in NC. Living with the Willie Chapman Family.

Wilie Chapman 26 Farmer Tenn

Emoline 22 Tenn

Nancy Mainor 54 N.C.

??? In the 1860 DeKalb, Nancy lives with the Chapman's, her son Vincent is listed right next door to the Chapman home. Was Vincent a laborer on the Chapman's farm and Nancy being the house maid ???

speculates on the origin of my line of Maynard's : " As far as I have been able to determine, none of the Wake county Maynard's migrated to White / DeKalb county. Two did go to Overton County, TN. ** ( this is important because the Widow's pension of Elizabeth Henderson Maynard, widow of Moses Vincent Maynard - states that he was born in Overton County TN. ) ** They were Silas Mainard, the son of William Mainard, Sr, and his second wife Agatha MNU. ( another one was ) Thomas Mainard, born 1798, the son of Jason, grandson of William Mainard, Sr. and his first wife.....*more* .... refer to supplement by Ed from December of 2000.

re: letter on file with White County Courthouse concerning Nancy Maynard and the welfare of her children and the possibility that the children may become wards of the State if Nancy didn't ...change her ways .....

" Thomas Eastland was an owner of a HUGE amount of land on Bon Air Mountain, was a owner in coal mines and I believe the railroad when it came to Sparta ( Tennessee, White County ) . And apparently he thought he was the moral authority of the district. Anyways, it was our Nancy against this rich and powerful man ... "

Here is the email sent to me by Jeff Maynard

" Maynard Notes: From Johnnie Maynard(a descendant of John Scott's wife Emeline)

This is something my grandfather, Jeffie Maynard had gotten prior to his death in 1990

it was written word for word from a grand daughter of Sam Maynard i hope this may help you!

Sam Maynard's mother was not married at the time of his birth, he was said to belong

to "Jackie" John Scott .

  • ** pure speculation on my part : Was Nancy Maynard, actually Nancy Thomas the d/o Wm. B. Thomas and Sarah "Sallie " Green and she Married Moses Maynard (b. ~1806 in Putnam county TN ? ) which is why Nancy named her eldest son Moses, in honor of his father - OR - did Nancy Maynard ( Maynard being her maiden name ) name her oldest son Moses in honor of her brother Moses Maynard ? ***

Sam Maynard married and raised one daughter , Julie Maynard Woods of Nashville , she had a daughter , Lena.

Sam Maynard later married Emaline (Sluder) or Shuton ,not sure which name is correct,

she was an English woman they had 2 children ; Joseph and Louise

Joe Maynard married Barb Hale she died then he married Mary " Sis " Hale , a sister to his first wife. Joe and "Sis" had two girls ; Ellen Maynard and Permelia.

Louiese married William Dauphes Prater they had 8 children ; Ephram, Zettie, Goldie, Mose, Earnest, Eithel, Johnnie, and Samuel.

Emaline , wife of Sam Maynard, died and was buried at the Davis Cemetery in Scott' S Gulf. Sam Maynard remarried and moved to Sexton , Alabama where he had sons; Marsh and Raymond and several others unknown to us . Some descendants are still on Sand Mountain, Alabama.

Ellen Maynard, daughter of Sam and Emaline, married Jim Maynard (no relation) and had 6 children ; Fate Melvinia, Hampton Wilson, Mary Sparkman, Lula Mayfield, Jeffie lee, and one infant that died at an early age

Permilia , daughter of Sam , married ; Mumphord Wilson and had 9 children

Joe Maynard remarried ; Jane Wilson after " Sis" died and had 5 children ;

Emma Prater, Clint, Addie Ffletcher and Mamie Rutherford (she just passed away this last month)

I have all the name of the children listed if you would like them

I hope this may help you

The Emiline you mentioned wasn't the same Emaline married to Sam Maynard. I have the listing from the 1880 census that shows a Emiline Maynard age 50 living with an John W. "Jack" Scott born 1816 ( this is Emaline d/o Nancy ) so he was age 64 in that listing I have the same names as you except it gives Letia instead of Selitia, I may have copied it wrong but I do have something here, I've gotten a name of "Edna " Scott written by Selitas name and have her as her grand daughter . My guess is she is still alive and I meant to contact

her but never did I haven't worked on the Maynard side in a long time because as you read above I have 2 sets of Maynards to follow up on and I get the 2 confused

also I have by word of mouth been told a story that you may find interesting

Emiline Maynard the one married to Jack Scott was a daughter of Nancy Maynard the one married to David Scott! The story goes that prior to the 2 meeting the Scott brothers Nancy was a "roundabout" and was given warning that either she "straighten" up or her

children would be taken from her so she met and married David and at the same time Emaline, her daughter, met and married Jack. Also it was said that some of the children Emaline raised may have really been her younger sisters and brothers I'm thinking Sam was one of those children that really was Emilines' brother rather than her son. I do have a listing of the names of the children that was to be taken away from her

1. emaline 1827

2. vinsent 1828

3. levi 1830

4. william 1832

5. jane 1834

6. rhoda 1838

7. sam 1845

This "warning" was said to have been given in 1849! Now mind you this was given to me by word of mouth and as of yet I don't have any proof of any of that story and it came to me through someone other than the one that give the above Sam Maynard story.

Here is another strange twist! The man Ellen Maynard married was Jim (supposedly no relation) his mother wasn't married either at the time of his birth and guess what her name was? Rhoda Maynard!!!! Could it be that his mother was a daughter of Nancy too? I'm not sure. Jim and Ellen were my great grand parents and they both died when my grand father was very young so he didn't know anything much about his family but he was told that his father was from Jackson county ( TN.) so I'm not sure at all if this is the same Rhoda or not but there are no other listing for a Rhoda Maynard in Tennessee in that time period!

Well I hope I haven't totally confused you but as I find out more I'll gladly pass it on

Hey Kathi

I just found some new info from census records and info from some articles I applied for in White county records. I checked info against my numerous census and papers I have and I think this is how it goes : nancy mainard is her married name and ( Husband Maynard ) the father of her children. white county papers do say the state was going to take her children, another article states why. according to all pieces nancy and her husband moved to Scotts gulf from lower Kentucky so he could work in coal mines. nancy met david scott when he was hired by bon air coal to hunt deer for the owner as he was full blooded indian and the best hunter in those parts...Nancy started having a affair with David Scott. In another article it states her husband filed for divorce and wanted custody of his kids because he stated Nancy was having an affair with a man of color; David Scott. He would not even let her see her children because of it, this is from White county court papers, anyway nancy got divorced and got her kids and was living with david scott but they did not marry. I do not know if David and nancy had children. David had a full blooded indian wife name Elizabeth before him and Nancy got together, do not know what happened to her just like my gggrandfather Davids brother John W. Scott had a indian wife named Emeline before he met and married Nancy's daughter Emeline. Macajer Scott; David and Johns father was half indian and David and Johns mother full indian, that is why David and John are listed as three quarters indian......Micagers father; William Scott, who was first to be given the land grant there in Tennessee which was north carolina at that time, got it for serving in revolutionary war. micager's wife susie was full blooded indian from the indians that were in that part of country when he first settled there.. micager scott had four children david john and a daughter he left in kentucky and a daughter rebecca who came to scotts gulf with him. she had a son named micager jackson. all the scotts up until 1880 are listed as free persons of color or mullatto, but that is how they listed indians at the time but on 1880. micajahs' son david and john are listed as native american. at that time of 1880 john and emeline mainards kids are listed as half indian, whereas kids from johns first marriage to indian woman emeline are listed as full blooded native american, which is my grandmother seleta her brother woodson pisson and van. they are children from john scott first wife. i do not know what nancy's maiden name was but this is how it seems to be when you put all the pieces together. i am redoing my family site but will send you a invite when i get it done right. now i have pictures of the scott from seleta on down so let me know if u want any of them.

Later,

Betty
