"Myrtie was the daughter of Nathaniel Lewis ("Lew") Willard who came to Michigan in 1828 when he was four years old. His family was one of the first families in this part of the state, settling near Otter Creek. He worked as a ship-builder until his marriage to Caroline Cook. After her death he married Rowena Butler Kinney, who became Myrtie's mother, and moved to the farm near Vienna (Erie).

"The Willards were active members of the Little Lake Baptist Church. Myrtie was baptized by immersion in the Little Lake in January and rode all the way home in her wet clothes."

"N. L. [sic] Willarad, a pioneer of Bedford township, passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. Lem Johnston on Sunday evening. he was known as 'Uncle Lue.' He was past the fourscore year and ten by a few years. Funeral services Tuesday morning at the M. E. church."

"Lewis N. Willard was born in New York state, September 1823, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. Johnston, on Sunday evening, February 8, aged ninety-six years and five months. He came to Monroe county in early youth and lived in Bedford township, where he was highly respected. he was an active member in the Baptist church and Sunday school at Temperance until the infirmities of old age kept him at home, where he passed the time in searching and reading the scriptures. he leaves two sons, three daughters and a stepson. They are John of Toledo, O., William of Monroe, Mrs. Carrie Lasky of Toledo, O., Mrs. Percy Beckwith of near Temperance, Mrs. Myrtie Johnston of Samaria and Amas Kinney of Temperance. The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. church on Tuesday [February 10] by Rev. Baughm. Interment was in the family lot in the Union cemetery beside his wife, who preceded him in death."
