About Nathaniel Packer

1851: Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire, England

1861: Doynton, Gloucestershire, England: Job Plough Boy

1866: Trevalyan to Adelaide

Nathaniel Packer married Alice Julia White on February 26, 1870 at her father's home in Beverley, South Australia.

Nathaniel had considerable property at various times. The District of Highercombe 1906 rate books show him as the owner of 255 acres near Highercombe (Section 5395), 57 acres near Spring Head (Section 820) and 15 acres near Torrens Gorge (Section 809). In addition, Nathaniel is shown as the occupier of 600 acres at Glen Urquart (Sections 38, 5398, 5394 and 5407). These sections are in an area roughly bounded by Ambervale Road, Houghton, Anstey's Hill and Halls Road, Hope Valley. He had a further 15 acres near the Torrens Gorge (Section 509). His holding in the Hundred of Goode on the West Coast was 3813 acres by way of Crown Lease dated October 1, 1908.

Nathaniel was active in local government. Ian Auhl's 'From Settlement to City', a history of the District of Tea Tree Gully 1836-1976, records him as a Councillor of the District Council of Highercombe in 1902 and 1903, and from 1906 to 1909. He was Chairman of the Council from 1907 to 1909.

Nathaniel must have owned one of the earliest gramophones in the district. Specific mention of the gramophone is made in an account of a Sunday School concert held at the Campbelltown Methodist Church on October 24, 1907, in 'The Chronicle' of November 2, 1907.

Nathaniel died on September 28, 1926 aged 79 years and is buried at the Athelstone Gorge Cemetery.

Nathaniel was born in Pucklechurch, Gloustershire on February 28, 1847, arrived in Adelaide on March 21, 1866 on a 1042 ton ship the Trevalya. The ship sailed from Plymouth on December 15, 1865. He was 18 years old when he arrived and is described in the ship's records as a farm labourer.
