Biography

Biography of Nathaniel Seaver pub in "Genealogical & Memorial History of State of NJ," pub: Lewis Historical Pub Co, NY, 1910. Article covered entire Seaver ancestry of Howard Eves Seaver. Nathaniel's portion reads: " (II) Nathaniel [Seaver], son of Robert & Elizabeth (Ballard) Seaver, was baptized in Roxbury, Jan 8 1645, & was slain by Indians in Battle of Sudbury, MA, Apr 21 1676, during King Philips War. He was 1 of 10 Sudbury men who were killed that day & served in Capt Wadsworth's Co. Site of battlefield where Capt Wadsworth so long held Indians at bay is on what is now called "Green Hill." While attack was being made on small body of 18 minute-men under Edward Cowell, Capt Wadsworth & his co came upon scene & seeing small party of Indians rushed forward w/impetuous haste & were caught in usual ambuscade, for when w/in abt mile of Sudbury they were induced to pursue body of not more than 100 Indians & soon found themselves drawn abt mile into woods, where on sudden they were encompassed by more than 500, & were forced to retreating fight toward hill where they made brave stand for time (1 authority says 4 hrs) & did heavy execution of enemy until (Hubbard says) night coming on & some of co beginning to scatter from rest of their companions were forced to follow them, & thus being surrounded in chase officers & most of co were slain. It is said savages set fire to woods & thus forced disastrous retreat, & only 13 out of entire co escaped to Noyes' mill.

He d intestate, & inventory of his estate was taken 19May1676 by Thomas Weld, Sr & John Stebbins. Estate amounted to 327 pounds, 16 shillings. Widow, Sarah Sever, acknowledged inventory 29May1676 bef Edw Ting & Joseph Dudley Esq (Suffolk Co Probate Records).
