I've often wondered where they got Kansas' name and her sisters, Nebraska and Arizona. Here is what I think happened. Just before Kansas was born, in 1854, Congress passed the Kansas Nebraska Act. I believe this is where they got her name ( she was born in 1855) and the name of her sister Nebraska who was next in the family order. In 1859 it was the end of the Mexican War and more territory was added to the US including Arizona. Arizona was born in 1859.
