About Nellie Alice Drennon
Nellie Alice Spurlock was born in Iowa to John William and Eliza Jane (Johnson) Spurlock. She grew up the oldest daughter and responsible for her younger siblings. When her family moved to Colorado, she met Irving Drennon. They were married in 1909. Irving was known as "Slew" and worked at the new Great Western Sugar Factory. He became one of the elite Sugar Boilers and worked for over 40 years for the company, retiring about the time the factory closed in Fort Collins.
During the dust bowl and depression years, Nellie and Slew took in family and always had another mouth to feed at their table. They were devout Christians and lived their beliefs.
They had three daughters: Dorothy (Mrs. Harold Dillon); Shirley (married 1 Orin Abrams and 2 Clement Spurlock) and Ruby (Mrs Neal Lindsey).
Nellie and Slew often had their grandchildren living with them. They were close to and helped many neighbors and friends.
When asked by a very young niece if she was Christian (member of the Christian Church), Nellie replied in gentle tones "I certainly try to be, honey!"
Nellie read many books, sharing them with her mother in the mountains and her sister on the homestead. She also wrote poetry and had a poem dedicated to her offspring and neices and nephews.
Her philosophy of life was that "We are just all passing through here" and would join our loved ones in time.
