About Nellie Goad

Nellie GOAD, sixth child of Payton and Sophia GOAD, was born March 12, 1847, and died July 8, 1924, aged seventy-seven years, three months and twenty-six days.

As a young woman she was married to C. Q. GOAD, who preceded her in death a little over a year.

She was mother and stepmother to several children, only three of whom remained to lovingly minister to her in her last sickness. They are Mart, of Bee Hunter, James of Midland, and Mrs. Lean RAPER, of nearby Lyons. Two grandchildren lived with her until they were married. They are Emmet MCCAIN, of Bethany, Illinois, and Mrs. Cleo SILVERS, of Bloomfield. Other grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Leonard WILLIAMS, are left to still work on. She was a member of the Church of God while yet they worshiped in the old school house, a regular attendant upon its services until advancing age and failing health kept her close at home, but she remained a firm supporter to the end. Soon after the missionary society was organized she became a member, and as no one has been more interested in its success and work than she. Though unable to attend its meeting often, she never lost interest nor failed in financial support.

She was a good accommodating neighbor, and many a neighbor’s child has been dressed the first time by her willing hands. Today (Thursday, July 10, 1924) she will be laid to rest in our own beautiful little city of the dead beside him with whom she traveled in loving companionship for nearly half a century. Funeral services were conducted by Elder T. A. COX in the Walnut Grove Church, Thursday afternoon, July 10, 1924.
