About Newberry Stockton, Sr

Newberry Stockton, Sr.

Newberry was a son of Daniel and Catherine (nee Ferrell) Stockton of Bedford County, Virginia, a grandson of Thomas and Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton, Sr., and a great-grandson of Davis Stockton of Albemarle County, Virginia.

Newberry's great-grandfather, Davis Stockton, was one of the first settlers in what would later become Albemarle County, Virginia. He was one of the founding fathers of the Orthodox Reformed Presbyterian Church in Albemarle County. Davis Stockton died in Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1761.

Newberry's grandfather, Thomas Stockton Sr., married Rachel Allen, a Quaker. They named one of their sons Newberry Stockton. He was the first of many Newberry Stocktons. Thomas Stockton died in Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1783.

Newberry's parents, Daniel and Catherine (nee Ferrell)Stockton, are also mentioned in Quaker records. The name of "Newberry" appears to be somehow connected to the Quaker religion. Daniel Stockton moved from Albemarle County to Bedford County, Virgina, where it appears that he died in about 1815.

Newberry married Bathsheba Brannon on 10 Jan 1801.

They moved from Virginia to Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Newberry Stockton Sr. died in Tippecanoe County on 10 Feb 1842. His wife Bathsheba (nee Brannon) Stockton died in Tippecanoe County on 8 March 1868. They are both buried in Greenbush Cemetery.
