About Ngatikaura Ngati

Ngati had been fostered by a cousin of his biological mother and was being raised in a Tongan language environment, until shortly after his third birthday, when he was returned to his birth mother, at her request. Maine Annabella Ngati, her partner, Teusila Fa'asisila, and their other children only spoke English. Within three months, Ngati was dead. Photos taken during the autopsy showed bruises from repeated beatings and weeping sores, one of which was "the size of a man's hand on his bottom." Ngati and Fa'asisila were found not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter, failing to provide a child with the necessities of life (medical care), and willful ill treatment of a child. In June 2007, both were sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of four years and eight months. Ngati gave birth to another child while in custody – which was placed with either foster or adoptive parents – and she was declined parole in November 2011. Fa'asisila was expected to be deported to Tonga on release in December 2011. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autopsy_images_of_Ngatikaura_Ngati

Ngatikaura was born in New Zealand on Aug. 8th, 2002 to mother Maine Ngati. When he was only one month old his mother gave custody of him to her cousin Kura Kaufasi and her husband Finau. He was a healthy happy little boy who would tell his adoptive parent he loved them every night before saying his prayers. He loved Winnie The Pooh and Piglet and had a picture of them that hung on his door. He also loved to play his ukulele, sing on his karaoke machine, going to the beach and going to the zoo with his adoptive parents. Then everything changed for him when he was three years old his birth mother decided she wanted him back even though she'd had nothing to do with him during the first three years of his life. His adoptive mother fought for him but unfortunately lost and he was sent to live with his birth mother and her husband Teusila Fa'asisila. There were four other children living in the home at the time as well. In his new home they spoke English where as Ngatikaura only knew tongan, causing him to have difficulty communicating with his new family. He quickly went from being a happy little boy to a scared child in his new home. He would sometimes soil himself, when he did his birth mother and her husband would beat him. He would throw his soiled pants out his window in hopes no one would know for fear of what would come next. Eventually he developed a weeping ulcer the size of a man's hand on his bottom, his birth mother never took him to the doctor for it, she just covered it with a sanitary napkin. His birth mother and stepdad would beat him for soiling himself or for any wrong doing his parents imagined he did. One day he was beaten for soiling himself again, his mother admitted that she had beaten him with a stick all over his body and beat him on his head with her hand, then she placed him in the tub and put him to bed. Later that day he woke up having to use the bathroom but couldn't get up as he was in so much pain he couldn't move and thus wet himself again. Again he was beaten. The next day, Ngatikaura soiled himself again, his stepfather admitted to beating him, making him stand with his hands on the wall and lifting his feet and then beat the soles of his feet with a stick. That afternoon Ngatikaura was slipping in and out of consciousness. His mother afraid of what would happen if she called for help did not call an ambulance. Later that evening she called an uncle who told her to call an ambulance for him, only then did she do so. He was then taken to Middlemore Hospital and transferred to Starship Children's Hospital covered in bruises. His adoptive mother came and stayed by his side. Before he died Kura his adoptive mother leaned over his battered body and whispered in his ear "Go In Peace", after that his battered body gave out and he took his final breath. His birth mother and stepfather only got 8 1/2 yrs for his death. Source: Find A Grave https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/49954082/ngatikaura-ngati
