The immigrant ancestor of the Buck family in Pennsylvani a w as Nicholas Buck 1 who emigrated unmarried allegedly fr om t he vicinity of Thionville, Lorraine Region, Departmen t of M oselle, in the valley of the Rhine River on the fron tiers o f Germany,Belgium,Holland, and Luxembourg-- eithe r on the s hip "St. Andrew" or the ship "Edinburgh" which a rrived at P hiladelphia on 25 Sept 1752 and 5 Sept 1748 res pectively.(H istory of Berks Co.,....Montgomery, 1909,J.M . It has been stated that for a short time after his arriva l , Nicholas Buck 1 resided in Reading, Berks Co., Pa, befo r e finally settling in Springfield Township, Bucks Co., P a . I can not verify his residing in Reading. However, i n 17 60 he signed a petition asking for a road to be buil t in Sp ringfield Township, Bucks Co. In 1777 he served i n the Rev olutionary War. In the year 1779 he was assesse d taxes in S pringfield Twp. for 200 acres of land. By 178 1 he was asses sed taxes also in Haycock Township, Bucks Co . for 45 more a cres which he had purchased from Ludwig Nus pickel. In 178 2 he sold 50 acres of his farm in Springfie ld Twp. retainin g 50 acres there and 45 acres in Haycock T wp. in the tax ye ars 1782,1783,1784,1785, and 1786 when h e died. The lands , 45 acres in Haycock were "unimproved " in 1787, but the 15 0 acre farm in Springfield Twp. conta ined two dwellings an d 1 outbuilding, which housed ten inh abitants as of 1784. The birth date of Nicholas Buck 1 has not been found. H e c ame to this country unmarried and on the 21st April,176 1 h e married his 1st wife, Mary Appolonia Kohl, born 4 Jul y 17 42/3 in Nockamixon Twp., Bucks Co. the daughter of Joh n Geo rge Kohl and his wife Mary Barbara Behren.(Goshenhopp en Reg isters (GR)p16) at whose house the marriage ceremon y was pe rformed. Four years later on the 7th January,175 6 she die d in Springfield Twp., Bucks Co. aged 22 years . On the 12t h May, 1766 Nicholas remarried in the Churc h at Goshenhoppen (now church of the Most Blessed Sacrament , Bally, Washingto n Twp., Berks Co., Pa.)to Elizabeth Hart man, single daughte r of Michael and Magdalen Hartman who h ad arrived on the sh ip "Edinburgh" on 5 Sept 1748. It sho uld be noted that a " John Nickly Buck" also arrived on thi s ship(GR, p102;Histor y of Berks Co.,p473)
Nicholas 1 reportedly died, when his son Nicholas 2 wa s 1 9 years old, on the 13th Nov 1786("History of Berks Co. ,"p4 73) His widow, Elizabeth (Hartman) Buck remarried o n 8 May , 1797 to John Kolb(GR, p181).
By his two marriages, Nicholas had ten children, five bo y s and five girls.
