John Tilley, master of a bark, was cruelly maimed by the Indians on the Connecticut River, near Saybrook, in October, 1636, and died three days later. He had a homelot assigned to him in Windsor, which Thomas Dewey "lawful att’y to Nich. Camp of M. and his wife Eady, formerly Eady Tilley" sold in 1646. She was buried in the garden of Mr. Peter Prudden, pastor.

Biography

One Name Studyname=Kemp
: Nicholas Camp, AKA Campe Nicholas Camp was part of the Puritan Great Migration. He emigrated from Nazeing, Essex, to the Milford Colony in Connecticut by 1639.<ref>Anderson, Robert Charles, The Great Migration Directory, Immigrants to New England 1620-1640 - A Concise Compendium, p. 55</ref>

Uncertain Origins===: An article written by John D. Baldwin, III, and published in 1997 inThe Connecticut Nutmegger, was entitled, Why the Origins of Nicholas Camp, Sr. of Milford Remain Elusive! Unfortunately, the titletells the story. Since Nicholas Camp (or Campe) was a fairly common name in Nazeing, England, at the end of the sixteenth century, we havethree or four from which to choose.<ref name="Bald">Baldwin, John D.,III, Why the Origins of Nicholas Camp, Sr., of Milford, Remain Elusive, (Vol 30, Pgs 62-3), The Connecticut Nutmegger. Glastonbury, CT: ConnecticutSociety of Genealogists, 1970-. (Online database, accessed April 28, 2014. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2009.) </ref> Date of Baptism could be 1591, 1597, or less likely, but still possible 1604.<ref name="Bald"/> His mother may have been Alice Case, Mary Tisonne, Mary Camp or someone else.

Birth ===: According to Baldwin in The Connecticut Nutmegger, most frequently given as baptism of Nicholas is 17 April, 1597, the date for "Nicholas, son of Old John Campe," but we have no documentation to support John Camp, "the elder", as father, or anyone else.<ref name="Bald"/>

Parents (not proven)

  • Father: John Camp
  • Mother: Mary Goore

Immigrated to Connecticut Colony===: NICHOLAS CAMP immigrated to America and was a free planter at Milford, Colony of Conn. as early as 1639. He drew lot #50 in the first division of land which contained 6 acres 1 rod and 20 poles. On Nov. 2, 1643, he joined the First Church of Milford. He was married three times. His first marriage was in England to Sarah Unknown, his second to widow Edith Tilley, and his third marriage was to Katherine, widow of Anthony Thompson.

Estate ===: The lack of probate records of his estate makes it impossible to assign all the children of Nicholas with certainty. The only proved surviving son was Nicholas, Jr., born around 1630, who had land recorded inMilford by gift of his father. It has sometimes been assumed that William Camp of Milford and Newark and Edward Camp of New Haven (whose widow married a Milford man) were other sons of Nicholas, Sr., but evidence is lacking.<ref name="McK">McKissen, Paul E. Mary Camp (b. Abt. 1625, d. Abt. 1652); 1767 20th Avenue, Longview, WA 98632, USA; paulmckissen@yahoo.com, accessed online April 28,2014 </ref>

: There were also daughters. One of them we identify as Mary, the first wife of John Baldwin, Sr. The evidence is discussed at length under Baldwin. In brief, her son Joseph Baldwin in a 1685 record called Nicholas Camp [Jr] his uncle, and the husband of her daughter Elizabeth in1680 called Nicholas Camp [Jr.] his cousin, a term applied to severaltypes of relationship, either direct or by marriage. John Baldwin of Newark (c.1642-1688) in his will called William Camp his uncle. He wasson of Nathaniel and Abigail Baldwin, hence Abigail was sister of William Camp. It seems somewhat likely that William and Abigail were children of Nicolas Camp, Sr. The evidence for Edward Camp is not so good.<ref name="McK"/>

Marriages

: Nicholas Camp married three times: : 1) Sarah Unknown (1599 - 1645) — married 1621 in Essex, England. SARAH, joined the church in Milford 4 Aug. 1644 and died there 6 Sept. 1645, four days after the birth of her twins, Samuel and John..<ref name="McK"/><ref name="Board"/>

First Wife, Sarah Was Not an ElliotThe will of Sarah Elliot's father is often misinterpreted. It actually reads, "my trusty and well-beloved friends, William Curtis, my son-in-law, Nicholas Camp the younger, and John Keyes ...." When this is published without the all-important comma after son-in-law, it reads," friends William Curtis, my son-in-law Nicholas Camp ...." When the comma is included, it is plain to see that Elliot's son-in-law was William Curtis, and "this is supported by published Curtis family material,"according to Baldwin.<ref name="Bald"/>

: 2. He married second, EADY [Edith] (b. 1695, at Nazeing, Essex, England) in 1646, She was widow of John TILLEY, Jr of Windsor, master of abark, who was maimed by the Indians on the Connecticut River, near Saybrook in October, 1636, and died three days later. He had a homelot assigned to him in Windsor, which Thomas Dewey "lawful att'y to Nich. : Child of Nicholas and Eady:

  • (Certain) Abigail Camp Baldwin . Abigail was baptized in Milford, August 29, 1647<ref name="Board"/>. She married Nathaniel Baldwin in 1643 in Milford, CT. Abigail died March 22, 1647.<ref name="Board"/><ref name="McK"/> : Note: The following child is not likely to be of Nicholas and Sarah or of Eady.

Errors often reprinted are that the "Samuel Camp" of the second generation in Milford, was a son of Nicholas Camp, 1st; and that this Samuelwas the grandfather of the Rev. Ichabod Camp. It has been established, however, that Samuel Camp, son of Nicholas, 1st, died in infancy, therefore the Samuel Camp of the second generation was the Samuel, son of Edward Camp, born 1644-45 at New Haven. It has also been establishedthat the Rev. Ichabod Camp was a son of John Camp who was a son of Edward Camp, 2nd, of Milford, Connecticut.<ref name="McK"/>

:Samuel Camp who was born on 15 Sep 1655 in Milford, New Haven, CT. He was christened on 18 May 1662 in First Congregational Church, Milford. He died on 4 Apr 1733 in Milford, CT. (This child is probably the son of Edward Camp).<ref name="McK"/>

Death and Legacy

: Nicholas' date of death is uncertain: : Jacobus lists Nicholas Sr. date of death as c. : 1654.<ref name="AncNH">Jacobus, Donald Lines. Families of Ancient New Haven (New Haven Genealogical Magazine), Vol.2, pg 375 </ref>

:This written by Boardman in 1906::The death of Nicholas Sr. Camp, is believed to have occurred not longbefore 1658, when a " Widow Camp" of New Haven gave to her daughter, Bridget Tompson, a portion due her from the estate of her father, Anthony Tompson. Only one person of that name is found in the list of freemen in 1669, who was the son. The practice in the Milford records had been to distinguish them by the titles " Senior " and "Junior," but the return made by the searchers for Whalley and Goffe, May 20, 1661, has the signature of " Nicholas Campe" without any such title <ref>New Haven Colonial Records, II: 389n.</ref> The same is true of a deed to Nicholas Campe and John Beard, September 16, 1664, and in this case theson, who was at other times associated with his brother-in-law in land transactions, was undoubtedly the person named.
