A Patriot of the American Revolution for MARYLAND with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A036375
Remarks: Ninian Beall Edmonston served in Revolutionary War as shown in the Archives of Maryland, Vol. 18, page 382. "Drafts from the classes for filling up the quota of men from Prince Georges County, Ninian Edmonston, July 13, 1781." There is no record, apparently, in regard to the length of his service or in what actions he was engaged, if any, but it is said that he served in a Maryland Militia Company under General Howard.
From the book “My Edmonstons and a few more” by Charles Ninian Edmonston (1903-1979) :
A list of inhabitants of St. Johns and Prince Georges Parishes in Prince Georges County Md. 31 August 1776, in Brumbaugh's Maryland Records page 49 contains a facsimile copy of the record and gives the following: Ninian Edmonston age 41. Other males in the family were ages 13, 11, 9, 6 and 1 year old. Ninian Edmonston then would have been born about 1735. Dorothy (his wife) was 35 years of age and there was one daughter listed, 6 years of age. Dorothy then would have been born about 1741. There was also one male slave age 35. They were maried, according to family records given by Mrs. Edgar Edmonston in Washington D.C. 5 Jan 1761. I have found no other record to substantiate this date. Ninian Edmonston died about 15 Feb. 1816, intestate. His wife, Dorothy died 15 Feb 1817 in Washington D. C. and made a will which is recorded in Will Book 2 page 72 in the D. C. Courthouse. "I, Dorothy Edmonston, late of Prince Georges County Md. But now of the City of Washington in the District of Columbia, being sick and weak of body but of sound and
disposing mind and memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being anxious to settle my worldly affairs and concerns and the latter to leave this world when it shall please Almighty God to call me hence do make, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say:
"It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid first by my executors herein after named. "I then bequeath and devise to my son, Archibald Edmonston the sum of one dollar and no more. To my son, Basil B. Edmonston the sum of one dollar and no more. To my son, Elijah Edmonston, the sum of one dollar and no more. "I then bequeath, give and devise all the rest and residue of my estate, both real and personal unto my five following children, to wit: James Brooke Edmonston ,Brooke Edmonston, Hosea Edmonston, Thomas Edmonston, and Enoch Edmonston to be equally divided between them, share and share alike, them and their heirs and assigns forever. "Lastly, I do hereby nominate and appoint my three sons, that is, Brooke Edmonston, Thomas Edmonston, and Hosea Edmonston, sole executors of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me made heretofore, ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this thirtieth day of September, in the year of our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred and sixteen. Signed, sealed and published.
