Norma E Churchill, 71, of 836 Washington Ave. formerly of Yarmouth died Thursday evening at a local hospital after a long illness. She was born in Olean, NY, a daughter of Levi and Florence Ellis Carter. She attended schools in Olean, graduating from Olean High School in 1936. She was the first woman to attend St. Bonaventure University in Olean. She was a graduate of Houghton College in Houghton, New York, and studied music for twelve years with professor Henry Hill. She moved to Maine from Syracuse in 1962. Mrs. Churchill was a counselor at the crossroads in Windham for five years. She taught music at Knapps Music store for three years and later at the Starbird Music Store for two years. Until her illness she operated her studio from her home. She was the former choir director for the First Baptist Church, Yarmouth, and served as church organist and choral director at the Stevens Avenue Congregational Church. She was a member of the Central Square Baptist Church and the O.E.S. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon, who died January 18, 1971. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ames Churchill of Portland; two sons, Stuart A. Churchill-Hoyer of Barrington, N.H., and David N Churchill of Millford, Del; a daughter Mrs. Dominick (Cindy) Orso of Portland; a sister, Marian Carter of Dunedin, Fla; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. A funeral will be held at 11 am. Wednesday at the Central Square Baptist Church, 466 Stevens Ave, with the Rev. Calvin T. Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at the Family lot at Riverside Cemetery, Yarmouth. Arrangements are by the Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St.
