About Norman B Bucher
9 Dec 1965: Norman B. Bucher, for many years one of Lebanon's .most outstanding and best loved teachers, died this morning in the Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 69. Bucher resided at 229 W. Sheridan Ave., Annville. He had been ill for a long period of time and had been hospitalized earlier this year. His death came one day after he was last admitted to the local hospital. Bucher retired in 1901 from the faculty of Lebanon High School. He had taught in the Lebanon School District 42 years. He was appointed as the first department head in mathematics for the Lebanon School District in 1954 and continued in that capacity until his retirement. Bucher was rated an outstanding teacher of mathematics not only in. the local district, but also in the state. He was instrumental in introducing many new math programs in the local schools. He was a 1914 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lebanon Valley College in 1918. He completed graduate studies for his master's degree at Columbia University in New York. Prior to coming to Lebanon, Mr. Bucher taught in Hamburg, N.J., in1919-1920 and in Mechanicsburg from 1920 to 1924. [Lebanon Daily News]
10 Dec 1965: A wife and two sons are among the survivors of Norman B. Bucher, well-known retired local teacher, who died at 10:40 a.m. Thursday in the Good Samaritan Hospital. Bucher, 69, resided at 229 W. Sheridan Ave., Annville. His death came following a lengthy illness. He had undergone surgery earlier this year. His wife is the former E. Mae Smith. One of their sons, Eugene, resides in Newark, Del., and is a science teacher at William Penn High School in New Castle, Del. Their other son is the Rev. Norman Bucher, pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Manheim. Bucher is also survived by five grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy, wife of Frank Goodling, Allen, Pa., and a brother, Percy Bucher, New York City. Bucher, a native of Bowmansdale, Cumberland County, was a son of the late John and May Bauman Bucher. Bucher was a member of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville. He was a former elder of the church and former president of the congregation. He also formerly taught the Men's Bible Class and at one time was a member of the choir. [Lebanon Daily News]
