As a young boy, he went to Kristiania (Oslo), probably before the rest of his family. He came to a baker who needed a farmer boy, but was later asked by "brugseier" Onsum at Kværner Bruk to stay at his place. He was sent to be a working pupil ("arbeidselev") at the newly established agricultural school in Ås.
At Ås, he found Thea Mathea Krogh (born in 1845 and daughter of Mathias Krogh).
They got 14 children (12 survived).
